The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department reports that Streets and Grounds crews will begin street repairs to Union Avenue from Center to South 19th Streets, weather permitting, beginning Sat., Nov. 5. Due to the existing condition of the street surface and the forecasted wet winter, temporary repairs will need to be performed in the interest of public safety and to alleviate the continual pothole maintenance that will be required to keep Union Avenue serviceable throughout the winter and spring months. Reconstruction work originally scheduled for 2011 was not performed because the Washington State Department of Transportation was using Union Avenue as a detour route for road construction taking place on Highway 16. Union Avenue from Center Street to South 19th Street is scheduled for reconstruction in the spring/summer months of 2012. Repairs will cost about $25,000 and be temporary in nature as all new asphalt will be removed during the reconstruction project slated for 2012. In addition, signage providing information regarding the project will be placed in and around the area to notify homeowners and businesses of the pending work.
