Tacoma hires Cherullo as finance director

City of Tacoma officials announced Friday Andrew Cherullo has been selected as the new finance director at City Hall.

Cherullo will serve as financial advisor to the city manager and Tacoma City Council, and oversee the operations and activities of the city’s finance department. He will begin working at City Hall on Thurs., Feb. 28.

The position has seen some turnover since Finance Director Bob Biles, who was hired in 2008, resigned on May 18, 2012. Assistant Finance Director Jeff Litchfield filled the position on an interim basis while Tacoma searched for a new finance director. Litchfield was hired last year as city manager of Hondo, Texas, and left Tacoma City Hall in August. Steve Call was hired as the interim finance director while the city worked to fill the position permanently.

Most recently, Cherullo served as the chief financial officer for the Washington State Health Care Authority in Olympia, Wash. Cherullo also served as the deputy executive director, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for the Massachusetts School Building Authority, and as the budget director and revenue director for the Massachusetts House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, where he began his career as a budget analyst.

Cherullo has bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science from the University of Montana, and a master’s degree in economics from Tufts University.
