The Washington State Department of Transportation said it has signed an agreement with Tacoma Narrows Constructors on the design and construction of the second Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Tacoma Narrows Construction is a venture of Kiewit Pacific of Renton and Bechtel Infrastructure of San Francisco.
The agreement allows the company to complete the design and construct the bridge for a price of $615 million. The total project cost is $849 million.
The project includes building a suspension bridge and improving about 3.5 miles of State Route 16 on each side of the bridge. The project will take about five and a half years to complete.
In March, the Legislature enacted legislation that appropriated $839 million for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge project. The appropriation includes $800 million in proceeds from the sale of bonds. Toll revenues will reimburse the bond proceeds.
The initial toll rate will be $3.
