Tacoma block parties, youth concerts on deck for National Night Out

Neighbors throughout Tacoma and Pierce County are invited to celebrate a night out against crime by attending a block party Tues., Aug. 5 during National Night Out (NNO).
Block parties will bring residents together to work on safety issues, strengthen relationships with law enforcement, and build a sense of community.

As of July 29, 92 parties have been registered with Safe Streets, with expected attendance close to 10,000 people. Typical block party activities include potlucks, safety fairs, children’s games, and visits from the police, sheriff and fire departments, costumed mascots and Safe Streets staff.

The anti-violence march organized by Safe Streets’ Youth Leading Change program has been replaced with “A Show at the Brick,” a safe, sober and violence-free night of music. The band lineup is New Heights, Ghost Runner on Third, Robots vs. Humans, and Verzatile @ A-P. Sponsored by Safe Streets with support from Club Impact, this free show will be held at Brick City, 754 Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m.

Safe Streets Campaign is the first private, non-profit organization that unites neighbors against crime — a model for other programs nationwide. It has served Tacoma and Pierce County since 1989. Learn more at http://www.safest.org .
