A parcel the Port of Tacoma seeks to buy for terminal redevelopment on the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula is home to the City of Tacoma’s Hylebos Marsh habitat restoration site. The City created the 9-acre habitat on Taylor Way near the former Tacoma Tideflats steam plant as part of its Natural Resource Damages Assessment (NRDA) settlement. If NRDA Trustees approve, the Port proposes to purchase the site for redevelopment and substitute a new habitat project to be constructed near Marine View Drive where Hylebos Creek flows into the waterway. The proposed substitution, estimated to cost about $1.2 million, would result in a larger habitat that includes freshwater wetland as well as higher-value fish-accessible areas. Commissioners will consider the plan at its Thursday meeting.
