Judy Schurke new deputy director for operations at L&I

Judy Schurke has been appointed deputy director for operations at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, L&I Director Paul Trause announced earlier this month.

Schurke will direct the agency’s efforts in information services, human resources, overall agency administration, planning and research.

“I am delighted that we were able to attract to the department such an able and experience manager,” Trause said. “She will contribute significantly to L&I’s efforts to improve its internal operations.”

For the past seven years, Schurke has been the Employer Member of the Washington State Board of Industrial Appeals.

She also spent seven years with the Boeing Co. as corporate workers’ compensation manager.

She worked at L&I for 15 years, moving from a clerk typist to a claim manager and later serving in several management positions at the agency.

She headed up the self-insurance compliance program prior to joining Boeing.

“My involvement in the department’s issues over the years has given me an appreciation of the professionalism and expertise of the agency staff, and also the challenging nature of their work,” Schurke said. “I look forward to being back and working with them.”

Schurke replaces Eva Santos, who was named deputy director for labor relations at the Office of Financial Management.

Schurke will begin her new job on Monday, April 21.
