1. Ordinance would place moratorium on permits for group homes

The City Council is scheduled to hear the final reading of an ordinance May 17 that would place an immediate moratorium on the establishment or acceptance of land use permit applications for group homes, group residential facilities and emergency and transitional housing for the next 365 days. The ordinance would set July 12 at approximately 5:30 p.m. as the date for a public hearing on the moratorium. A substitute ordinance that would change some details of the moratorium is expected to be unveiled May 17.

2. Ladenburg, Talbert to be appointed to Family Justice Center board

Deputy Mayor Connie Ladenburg and Council Member Rick Talbert could be named to the board of the Tacoma-Pierce County Family Justice Center if the City Council approves a resolution on the May 17 agenda. The Family Justice Center board will consist of two elected officials each from the City and the County, with a fifth member to be selected by the other four members. The board will meet quarterly to receive updates from the Family Justice Center Director regarding the budget and overall operation of the center. The Council approved an interlocal agreement with Pierce County for the operation of the Family Justice Center on April 26.

3. Celebrate Public Works Week May 15-21

If you walk, drive, toss trash or flush a toilet in Tacoma, you rely on Public Works. To recognize the critical behind-the-scenes contributions of about 700 Public Works employees across eight divisions in Tacoma, the City is celebrating National Public Works Week May 15-21. At the May 17 City Council meeting, Mayor Bill Baarsma will proclaim May 15-21 Public Works Week in Tacoma. 4. Study session to include Tall Ships event update

During the May 17 study session, members of the City Council are scheduled to hear an update on the Tall Ships event that will be held on the Tacoma waterfront on June 30 through July 5. The Council is also scheduled to hear updates on the Employer Enhanced Child Care Referral Program and a revision to the City’s hazardous sidewalk program. The public may attend the noon study session in Room 16, Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., but the Council will not take public comment.
