On Saturday, March 16, 2002 the Mayor’s Office of the City of Tacoma, the Tacoma Public Library and a host of other community organizations will officially launch “Tacoma Reads Together,” the first citywide reading initiative.
Tacomans are invited to read Harper Lee’s classic American novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” during the month of March and discuss the book in a variety of book discussions at all city libraries during April.
Copies of the book, reading and discussion guides, a full schedule of special events (including book discussions, play readings and showings of the Academy Award winning movie) and a “Tacoma Reads Together” participants’ buttons will be available at all of Tacoma’s ten libraries.
“ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is an excellent selection for Tacoma’s first reading initiative,” said Mayor Bill Baarsma.
“The book is a lesson plan in itself of history, culture, beliefs and behaviors.”
The Library is encouraging clubs, organizations, local businesses and churches to host their own discussion programs, as well as providing free training for discussion leaders.
More information about “Tacoma Reads Together” is available by calling 253/591-5666, visiting all Tacoma library locations and at the library’s Web site at:
