“Thousands of Washington commuters are expected to join the effort to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by finding other ways to get to work during Rideshare Week 1999, this October 18 through 22.The statewide campaign encourages the use of alternative transportation such as carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, walking or bicycling at least once during the third week of October.Rideshare Week is an annual campaign sponsored by the Washington State Ridesharing Organization. Commuters who use an alternative to driving alone during the week are entered into a drawing for numerous prizes including airline tickets, sports memorabilia, sailing trips and more.It is estimated that the average Washington commuter spends the equivalent of an extra work day behind the wheel of a car each week contributing to what is now considered one of the most congested road systems in the country.Last years campaign reached a record level of more than 23,000 participants and 1999 campaign planners said they expect a larger number this year. Campaign materials are provided to counties statewide who in turn assist over 1,000 employers in implementing promotions at their worksites. Many employers donate prizes to the campaign which help contribute to its success.Commuters can register for Rideshare Week through their employer or at www.wsdot.wa.gov/wsro/rideshare.”
