Business Leadership Awards nominations being accepted

Nominations are being accepted for the 2002 Business Leadership Awards, presented by University of Washington, Tacoma Business Administration, Heritage Bank and the Business Examiner Newspaper Group.

Up to 10 persons are recognized with Business Leadership Awards for their accomplishments and competencies in their field of business, support of the region’s business climate, and contributions to the community.

One from among those recognized is named the Business Leader of the Year during a gala event Jan. 30.

Judges will also present a Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing an individual’s many years of contributions to their field of business and the community, and a Rising Star Award to an individual who is new to the area and has potential to influence the community for years to come. Those receiving these honors will also be honored during the awards event.

Anyone may submit a nomination. The deadline is Nov. 15. Nomination forms for this year’s awards are available online at: www.BusinessExaminer.com/BLA.

Decisions will be made public in January, except for the Business Leader of the Year, who will not be revealed until the Jan. 30 awards event.

A panel of judges comprised of UW Tacoma business faculty and members of the UW Tacoma Business Advisory Board will review nominations and select the awardees.

Business leaders are nominated and evaluated according to the competencies emphasized in the UW Tacoma Business Administration curriculum, developed in response to the feedback from the region’s business community.

These competencies include integrated business knowledge, strategic thinking, communication, teamwork and professionalism. In addition to private-sector business people, the awards program recognizes non-profit and government managers who demonstrate outstanding business competency or support development of the business climate for the region.

“The awards program legitimizes the work that a number of very successful individuals are doing in our community,” said Patricia Fandt, director of Business Administration. “It also extends information and knowledge about the range of things people are doing here in Pierce County.”
