In response to the major earthquake that jolted southwestern China’s Sichuan Province May 12, the City of Tacoma is expressing deep condolences and sympathies for the destruction and devastation that occurred by sending a letter to the city of Mianyang, China.
Tacoma established a Friendship City relationship with Mianyang, China, through City Council resolution on Mar. 7, 2006. The relationship is supported by the Chinese Reconciliation Park Foundation and China’s Sichuan Province.
“The City of Tacoma cherishes its Friendship City relationship with Mianyang, and as such, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your citizens as you work towards recovery,” reads a portion of the letter. “Please know that the City of Tacoma stands ready to provide assistance if called upon.”
The Mayor and City Council encourage those who can to donate to one of the many relief funds to assist with the efforts in this devastated region.
