Tacoma plans 3-day Puyallup River Bridge closure for repairs

The City of Tacoma will close the Puyallup River Bridge for three days in June to complete repairs to the 88-year-old structure.

The bridge, which is located on Puyallup Avenue between Portland Avenue and Milwaukee Way, will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning on Mon., June 1, through Weds., June 3, but remain open to bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Detours will be in place for motor vehicle traffic.

According to City officials, the closure is necessary to repair structural damage that occurred in April when a high truck load impacted a cross brace on the bridge (see “Citing structural damage, Tacoma closes aging Puyallup River Bridge,” Tacoma Daily Index, April 13, 2015). Weight restrictions of 10 tons will still be in effect after the repairs are completed. These restrictions won’t be lifted until the entire bridge is replaced.
