City of Tacoma: Applicants needed to fill 12 open seats on 4 citizen panels

Tacoma City Council is looking to fill 12 positions on four citizen panels.

First, councilmembers are looking to fill a position on the Citizen Review Panel, a seven-member advisory panel to the Council with oversight of Tacoma Police Department policy. This Council appointment expires on Dec. 31, 2015. Members of the Citizen Review Panel are recommended for Council appointment by the Public Safety, Human Services and Education Committee. The Panel is responsible for conducting policy review, reviewing trends in complaint investigation and statistical reports, and engaging in community outreach. Qualified applicants will be screened by a criminal background check. Each applicant must be a registered voter, have lived in Tacoma for at least two years immediately before applying, not hold any other elected public office, not currently serve as a member of the Tacoma Police Department or be an immediate family member of a department employee. Second, councilmembers are looking to fill a position on the Board of Ethics. The Board of Ethics consists of five Tacoma residents recommended by the Government Performance and Finance Committee and appointed by the City Council. The membership term is three years, expiring Dec. 31, 2015. The role of the Board is to receive, investigate, and make recommendations for disposition of complaints of violations of the Code of Ethics by the City Manager, the Director of Public Utilities, a member of the Public Utility Board, or a City elected official. The Board may also render advisory opinions in response to a request by one of the aforementioned officials, and render and publish formal opinions on any matter within the scope of the Board’s authority which it may deem appropriate. Third, councilmembers are looking to fill a position on its Board of Building Appeals. Applicants should have knowledge or experience in design and/or construction related to building, fire, mechanical, plumbing and/or energy codes. Applicants with experience in sustainable building construction are also encouraged to apply. The appointment will fill a position being vacated on Thurs., Aug. 1, 2013. This appointment will be a five-year term. All Board members are eligible to re-apply for additional five-year terms. The Board of Building Appeals is a quasi-judicial board consisting of seven members recommended by the Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee and appointed by the City Council. Members review and provide recommendation for approval to Council for new editions, amendments and proposed changes to the City’s Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire, Dangerous Building, Minimum Housing and Energy codes; hold hearings and make decisions on appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the building official or Fire Chief relative to the application and interpretation of the Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire and Energy codes; and hear appeals of orders or decisions made by the Hearing Officer for the Dangerous Building or Minimum Housing codes. Finally, councilmembers are looking for nine members for a newly established City Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC). The CERC serves as an advisory and action committee on matters pertaining to City-hosted events and special recognition programs. The committee is responsible for planning, reviewing and evaluating events, engaging the community in its fundraising efforts, and soliciting corporate and private sponsorships to leverage funds for City-hosted events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and the City of Destiny Awards. The nine members appointed to the CERC will consist of Tacoma residents, with representatives from each of Tacoma’s five Council Districts, and bring a range of perspectives and expertise that focus on the City’s commitment to celebrate civic engagement and special observations.
