A stretch of 9th Street East, between 190th Avenue East and 198th Avenue East, was reconstructed to enhance safety by re-aligning and regrading the roadway to increase sight distances. The road was closed in June to allow a Pierce County contractor to excavate the site and lay asphalt. The road was re-opened last week, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. Crews will continue to work along the roadway through September in order to allow crews to complete planting preparation aspects of the project. Periodic lane restrictions are expected during that time. (IMAGE COURTESY PIERCE COUNTY)

The City of Tacoma recently completed a project to restore the Children's Bell sculpture located along Ruston Way near the shores of Commencement Bay. The four-foot-tall bronze artwork was created in 2000 by artist Larry Anderson in order to celebrate the life, spirit, and accomplishments of Washington PAVE Founder and Director Marty Gentili, who passed away in 1993. The bell is decorated with images of children around the border and is meant to be rung by visitors. In April, area visitors noticed safety barricades were in place around the sculpture while the contractor spent several weeks completing restoration work on the Children's Bell sculpture.
