Tacoma selects annual City of Destiny Award recipients

The City of Tacoma will recognize Tacoma’s top volunteers during the 30th annual City of Destiny Awards ceremony in June at the STAR Center.

The 2016 City of Destiny Awards recipients are Mikayla Smith (Youth Leadership); Wilson High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (Youth Service); Commander Alan Mandigo (Adult Leadership); Elizabeth “Bette” Miller (Lifetime Service); Agnes Pate and Melissa Galinda (Environmental Sustainability); Dometop Neighborhood Alliance (Group); Frank J. Gavaldon (Equity and Empowerment); Pierce County Project Access Healthcare Volunteers (Community Health and Wellness); and South Tacoma Soccer Club (Youth Development).

This year’s awards recipients (and nominees) will be recognized during a ceremony and reception beginning at 5 p.m. on Fri., June 3, at the STAR Center, located at 3873 S. 66th St., in Tacoma. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org/DestinyAwards.

Since 1987, the City of Destiny Awards program has honored more than 200 local volunteers. The program is spearheaded by the Tacoma City Council-appointed City Events and Recognitions Committee, which is comprised of local community leaders from a broad array of backgrounds and areas of expertise. This committee develops the City of Destiny Awards nomination tools and selection criteria, selects the City of Destiny Awards winners, and plans the annual City of Destiny Awards event.

The annual City of Destiny Awards event is also covered by TV Tacoma and aired on both the Click! and Comcast Cable systems. On Click!, TV Tacoma can be seen on Channel 12 within Tacoma City limits and in Pierce County, with the exception of University Place, where TV Tacoma can be found on Channel 21. On Comcast, TV Tacoma can be seen on Channel 12 within Tacoma City limits and on Channel 21 in Pierce County. TV Tacoma is not on the Comcast system in University Place, but is accessible anywhere via the Internet.
