Tacoma offering rebates on washers

Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water customers looking for ways to save money on their household expenses can start in the laundry room.

The two utilities are offering customers rebates on electricity- and water-saving clothes washers with a program called “Double Your Savings with Energy Star.” Rebates up to $100 are available on qualified washing machines purchased between April 15 and July 15. Rebates range from $60 to $100, depending on the model purchased. Customers will receive rebate coupons with their utility bill beginning April 15.

“This is a great deal,” said Hollis Tamura, Tacoma Power energy specialist who is managing the program. “You get a rebate right off the bat when you buy the machine. Then you save on electricity and water bills month after month. If you buy an ultra-high-efficiency machine, you get a larger rebate and greater energy savings. And, because nine manufacturers are participating, customers can select from a wide range of machines.”

Tamura said customers can expect that a washer that meets Energy Star standards will use half as much electricity as a standard washer. The machines also will extract more water from clothes during the spin cycle, resulting in reduced drying time, which reduces electricity use and wear-and-tear on clothes. The can also save 6,000 gallons of water per year.

“It’s amazing to consider how changing just one small thing – how you do your laundry – can make such a big difference in saving electricity and water, and lowering your utility bills,” Tamura observed.

Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water are offering rebates in partnership with local appliance retailers, manufacturers, the federal Energy Star program and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance.
