For up to two weeks starting Feb. 21, crews working for design-builder Tacoma Narrows Constructors will close the two center lanes and do numerous rolling slowdowns across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge during night hours. The lane closures and rolling slowdowns will allow crews to remove a temporary enclosure on the lowest strut of existing bridge’s Tacoma tower. During the rolling slowdowns, all traffic will be cleared under the strut for up to 30 minutes so work can be done safely over the lanes.
Scheduled lane closure times are listed below. Note that in the event of rainy weather or high winds, the work may be postponed.
Tuesday, February 21 through Thursday, February 23
— Eastbound center lane to close at 7 p.m., reducing eastbound traffic to one lane.
— Lane to reopen each follow
— Westbound center lane to close at 9 p.m., reducing westbound traffic to one lane.
— Lane to reopen each following morning by 7 a.m.
— Multiple rolling slowdowns to occur between midnight and 4 a.m. each night. Each rolling slowdown will delay ALL SR 16 traffic at the bridge up to 30 minutes.
Sunday, February 26 through Thursday, March 2
— Same timelines listed above, including the rolling slowdowns.
The purpose of the strut enclosure was to allow seismic retrofit work inside the strut without affecting traffic. Similar work was already done on the lowest strut of the Gig Harbor tower.
