Public hearing regarding proposed airport compatibility overlay zoning district in South Tacoma on November 7

Comments requested by November 9

On Wednesday, November 7, the City of Tacoma’s Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Airport Compatibility Overlay Zoning District. The public hearing will be held at the STAR Center (3873 S. 66th St.) beginning at 5:30 PM.

Community members can learn more by attending an informational meeting on Wednesday, October 24, from 5:30 – 7 PM, also at the STAR Center.

An approximately 200-acre area in South Tacoma is located within JBLM’s Accident Potential Zone II. Within this area, the U.S. Air Force and the JBLM Joint Land Use Study recommend changes to zoning and development standards that would limit significant increases in the number of people living, working or gathering in the area.

The area’s approximate boundaries are:

Western: 170 feet east of S. Tacoma Way

Northern: 240 feet north of S. 72nd Street

Eastern: 85 feet east of S. Fife Street

South: City limits (S. 80th Street alignment).  More information can be found online: http://www.cityoftacoma.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=117905

The Planning Commission is inviting public comments on the proposed permanent regulations that, subject to further changes, would be forwarded to the City Council for adoption before the end of the year.

In addition to comments received at the public hearing, written comments are being accepted until 5 PM on Friday, November 9. Comments may be submitted to: Planning Commission, 747 Market St., Room 345, Tacoma, WA 98402, via fax at (253) 591-5433, or via email to lharala@cityoftacoma.org.
