Neighborhoods to receive winter storm preparation information

Information on preparing for winter weather-related emergencies will be handed out to residents of flood-prone neighborhoods in the Orting and Riverside areas Sat., Oct. 11 and in the Sumner and Fife areas Sat., Oct. 18.

Teams of two or three persons will be calling on households between 9 a.m. and noon both Saturdays. The teams are made up of DEM staff and volunteers, fire district or police department employees in the respective areas. The neighborhoods experienced serious flooding during storms that blasted the South Sound in November and December 2006.

“We want people to understand the dangers of living in areas subject to flooding, and the best way is to talk with them directly,” said Emergency Management Director Steve Bailey. The involvement of county, city and fire district staff hopefully will demonstrate to citizens the seriousness of the issue.

The teams will hand out information on storm and flood preparedness, the National Flood Insurance Program and all-hazards NOAA radios. The participating fire districts are Orting No. 18, Riverside No. 14 and East Pierce Fire & Rescue 22.
