Law enforcement agencies throughout Pierce County will be participating Saturday through Monday in a holiday DUI and traffic safety emphasis patrol.
Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of summer and is considered one of the three deadliest weekends for car crashes during the year, behind only Memorial Day and Fourth of July.
Last year, officers arrested 72 persons for alcohol- and drug-related traffic offenses, including 57 for driving under the influence.
Officers from Bonney Lake, Buckley, DuPont, Eatonville, Edgewood, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Orting, Puyallup, Puyallup Tribal, Roy, Ruston, Steilacoom, Sumner, Tacoma, University Place and Wilkeson police departments will be on patrol.
They will be joined by Pierce County deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers.
The emphasis patrols are coordinated by the Tacoma/Pierce County DUI Task Force and supported by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
