County probation employees, program honored by state

The Washington State Misdemeanant Corrections Association announced that Pierce County received three awards at the association’s recent Spring Conference in Chelan.

Kathleen Geller, deputy director of the District Court Probation Department, was named Supervisor of the Year; and Kimberly Samuel, a legal process assistant, received the Support Staff of the Year award.

The county’s Jail Enforcement Compliance Program was recognized as the Program of the Year. JEC sends deputies into the field to either contact or arrest offenders who are not in compliance with court- ordered alternatives to custody.

“District Court Probation staff and Sheriff’s deputies work together to ensure the program’s effectiveness,” said Elaine McNally, District Court Probation Department director. “The County Council provided the funding for this innovative program, which was identified by the Criminal Justice Task Force as a cost-effective measure for holding offenders accountable.”
