Cosmic Spark Designs, a new endeavor by Tacoma artist Penny Russell

Local artist Penny Russell has been creating hand painted glasswork for over 10 years, working with Acrylic Enamel paint on porcelain, ceramic, and glassware, with designs flowing with all the curves and nuances of each item, and is hand painted and cured. In 2015 she added acrylic on canvas to her repertoire. Russell started Cosmic Spark Designs to showcase her hand-painted works of art, inspired by the beauty of living in Washington.

The elegant designs are layered to look like a 3-D effect on the outside of each of the fine art pieces. They are part of living art in motion – practical pieces to be used for everyday living, such as the signature “Flower in Bloom” beverage glasses. What is unique about the “Flower in Bloom” series is all the paint is on the outside, with beverage glasses painted in layers to create an illusion of a flower. Look inside and it is revealed how beautifully mastered and crafted each one is. It looks as though you are drinking from a flower in nature. These glasses can have butterflies, bees, dragonflies and ladybug insect charms and many different types of flowers, with the stems painted either solid or with leaves.

The unique designs are available on other pieces as well, from jewelry boxes to tea sets, garden lanterns to candle holders. There are even hummingbird feeders created from reclaimed glass bottles. All items are 100% hand-painted using quality acrylic enamel paints and are cured for a scratch-resistant, high-gloss finish, and are signed by American Artist Penny Russell.

Russell has lived in the Pacific Northwest for most of her adult life, and enjoys the richness of the beauty of the area. She resides in Tacoma, Washington and works out of her studio in her home. She is a self taught artist and loves to be creatively challenged, learning new creative processes and embracing new ideas in her artistic endeavors. She has been influenced by several artists over the years, but the ones that seem to have left an indelible mark on her style have been Donna Dewberry and Bob Ross through PBS.

You can find Russell’s art online at https://www.cosmicsparkdesigns.net/. Cosmic Sparks Designs will also be showcased at the November 4th Sip & Shop event at Freighthouse Station Marketplace. See below for more information.
