Census Collecting Data on Expenses

“The Census Bureau is collecting information on how much money Americans spend on groceries, clothing, health care and housing as the agency collects data for its Consumer Expenditure Survey.About 7,500 households nationwide will be interviewed once every three months during the next year to survey how they spend their money. Another 7,500 households will be asked to keep a diary of their expenses over a two-week period.Government economists use the results of this data collection to update a portion of the Consumer Price Index, the single most widely used measure of inflation in the U.S.”
