A major part of the 12th Street hill climb renovation in downtown Tacoma is a public art installation called "Projecting Drop" by Vancouver, B.C. artist Jill Anholt. The City of Tacoma is planning a formal ceremony as early as next month to mark the project's completion. Anholt was in town this week to work on night-time elements of the installation. "Once I came out with paletas, it opened up a lot of doors for me," says ice cream vendor Jeff Smeed. He sells traditional Mexican paletas that are made in Qunicy, Wash., and shipped to Tacoma. "If I'm going to go around and sell ice cream, I want to sell something that I like and that I know other people are going to like. I've had a really good reaction to the paletas. The best marketing tool I have is the product. Once people try it, they like it. They are hooked on it. It's something new. It's something different." (PHOTO COURTESY JEFF'S ICE CREAM)

This was the scene Monday morning at 11:50 a.m. inside the parking garage at South 10th Street and A Street, across the street from Russell Investments former headquarters building. Earlier this month, Russell's 900 employees began the move from its 12-story building on 909 A St. in downtown Tacoma to its new home in the former WaMu Center, located at 1301 Second Ave., in downtown Seattle. Russell purchased the WaMu Center and renamed it the Russell Investments Center. The move was completed over the weekend. The global investment advisory firm founded in Tacoma in 1936 grew to become downtown's largest private employer. On Sept. 9, 2009, the company announced it would move to Seattle by the end of this year. (PHOTO BY TODD MATTHEWS)
