146 arrested in 10-county DUI patrol

Law enforcement officers from 10 Puget Sound counties arrested 146 motorists for impaired driving during the fifth annual “Surround the Sound” DUI and traffic safety emphasis patrol.

Pierce law enforcement contributed 34 DUI arrests, the most for any county. Local officers also arrested four for criminal traffic offenses and 33 for traffic infractions, and Liquor Control Board agents cited three licensed beverage premises for selling to underage operatives.

During last year’s emphasis, 115 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence in the 10 counties.

Participating Pierce County law enforcement agencies included Bonney Lake, Fife, Lakewood, Puyallup, Puyallup Tribal, Ruston, Steilacoom, Sumner, Tacoma, and University Place police departments.

Deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, troopers from the Washington State Patrol, and agents from the state Liquor Control Board also participated.

They joined counterparts in Clallam, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom counties.

The monthly Pierce County emphasis patrols are coordinated by the Tacoma/Pierce County DUI Task Force and supported by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
