Progress continues on the $1.3 million renovation of Johnny’s Seafood Co. along Thea Foss Waterway in downtown Tacoma. The seafood merchant — which was founded 60 years ago in Tacoma and leased City-owned property at 1199 Dock St. for nearly 40 years to operate its business near the waterfront — closed its doors on Jan. 12 to complete a major remodel that includes a new seafood store, cafe, and bistro. The company also plans to complete the public waterfront esplanade that fronts its headquarters building as part of a deal completed last year wherein the City of Tacoma sold the previously-leased, 28,000-square-foot parcel of land to Pacific Seafood Co., Johnny’s Seafood Co. parent company, for $700,000. The remodeled business is expected to re-open later this spring.
