Celebrate the harvest and the ever-growing number of community gardens in Tacoma and Pierce County by gathering for the 2011 Community Garden Harvest Tour between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sat., Sept. 10, at the Franklin Garden, South 15th Street & Puget Sound Avenue, Tacoma (southeast corner of Franklin Park). This event is free. Self-guided maps will be handed out at Franklin Garden starting at 10 a.m. There will also be community information booths, a free raffle for all attendees and giveaways at the garden. More than 20 community gardens throughout Pierce County will be open for visitors during the event. Rebuilding Together South Sound will announce the “Community Garden Design Contest” winner to kick off the morning. Gardeners have submitted ideas for permanent infrastructure to be added to their garden. The winning entry will be built. Take a 10-mile group bicycle tour to four of Tacomas community gardens. The group tour leaves at 10:30 a.m. from the Franklin Garden and will return around 12:30. Please wear safety gear. The Community Garden Harvest Tour is presented by the Tacoma-Pierce County Community Garden Program, a project of the Cascade Land Conservancy. Program partners also include the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, City of Tacoma and TAGRO.
