WSDOT: Pierce County awarded $2.1M for road safety projects

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) officials announced Thursday 46 cities and counties across Washington will receive more than $48 million in Federal Highway Safety Improvement funds that aim to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians.

“These projects provide an ideal opportunity to help achieve the state’s ‘Target Zero’ safety goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2030,” said WSDOT Local Programs Director Kathleen Davis. WSDOT’s Local Programs provides federal safety money to jurisdictions in Washington for engineering solutions that reduce fatal and serious injury collisions. “The federal safety program continues to be a great resource for improving safety in Washington’s communities.”

WSDOT received 89 applications representing $110 million in project needs. All proposed projects were evaluated against crash data involving serious injury and fatal crashes. Successful projects were those that could achieve the highest safety benefit with the lowest cost.

Locally, the City of Tacoma was awarded $945,166 for one project; Pierce County was awarded $2,161,920 for five projects; the City of Puyallup was awarded $2,219,000 for three projects; and the City of Lakewood was awarded $1,611,850 for two projects.
