Traffic infraction fines go up

New fines for traffic violations kicked in Sunday. A sampling of the new consequences:

– The fine for seat-belt violations has increased from $86 to $101. And unbuckled passengers can be fined as well, but the driver gets the fine if the rider is younger than 16.

– Ignition-interlock devices will be re-quired for repeat drunk drivers, those who refuse to take breath or blood tests for alcohol and anyone found with a breath or blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher. The legal limit in the state is 0.08. Being convicted of driving drunk with passengers younger than16 will automatically require the use of such a device for at least 60 days.

– Now there’s a $25 fee whether you show up in person or mail in proof of insurance.
