“Tacoma Community College’s student newspaper, The Challenge, has won first place General Excellence in the community college division of the Northwest 2000 Excellence in Journalism Competition. The event is sponsored by the Western Washington Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.The Challenge staff also won 13 individual awards in the Greater Northwest Student Journalism Awards 2000 competition. The individual contest received over 340 entries from 20 schools in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.This is the second year in a row The Challenge has won awards in the competition.Individual writing awards went to:- Erik Jaccard – Third Place, Spot News, WTO demonstrations- Emily Jones – Second Place, Review, Rage Against the MachineIndividual awards in photography, art and design categories include:- Joe Barrentine – First Place, Sports Photo; Second Place, Stand Alone Photo; Third Place, Feature Photo; honorable mention, News Photo; and honorable mention, Illustration. Barrentine ranked second among the contest’s top award winners.- Curt Gullan – First Place, Illustration.- Gullan and Barrentine shared the Second Place Illustration award.The Challenge placed third in the overall category behind North Idaho College and Oregon State University. TCC ranked second among the top award winners.”
