International Building Code class
A new class that covers the newly adopted International Building Code (IBC) is being offered this fall at Tacoma Community College.

Taught by K.C. Ellis, building official for the City of Lakewood, the course is based on broad-based principles for the installation and design of performance building systems. Content includes safety concepts; structural, fire and life-safety provisions; means of egress; interior finish requirements; technology; occupancy; classifications; and the latest industry standards in material design. The IBC was recently adopted by the state of Washington and replaces the Uniform Building Code. Course participants will become familiar with the IBC and learn to apply it.

The class is open to anyone but may be of particular interest to code officials, architects, engineers, interior designers, those pursuing building code certification, plan checkers and inspectors, Ellis said.

Introduction to the International Building Code will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 24 through Dec. 3 on TCC’s main campus, 6501 S. 19th St., Tacoma. The course fee for this non-credit class is $299 and does not include the required textbook.
