Tacoma Smelter Plume update leads Tacoma City Council study session agenda

Tacoma City Council is scheduled Tues., Aug. 23 to receive a briefing from Washington State Department of Ecology staff on the Tacoma Smelter Plume Cleanup Plan which will be released later this year. The plan’s four main components that will impact Tacoma are:  1) a proposed residential Sampling and Remediation Program; 2) continuing the Soil Safety Program; 3) ongoing education and outreach; and 4) encouraging sampling and cleanup during development.

As a second item on the agenda, staff will present a schedule of key dates for the review and adoption of the update to the Shoreline Master Program. Additionally, there will be a review of the City’s debt service by funding source and year, potential funds available from the 2009 and 2010 LTGO bond issues and current capital project requests.

Lastly, Interim City Manager Rey Arellano will share information on a three-part series of topics related to the City’s economic development strategy.The Council will not take public comment during the noon study session in the Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., Room 16.
