The 2014 City of Destiny Award recipients are Joan Vo (Youth Leadership); Nina Thach (Youth Service); Mike Mowat (Adult Leadership); Cathy Barton (Adult Sustained Service); Tacoma Nature Center Park Stewards (Environmental Sustainability); Stadium High School Navy Junior ROTC (Youth Group); Tacoma First Nazarene Church (Community Partnership); Wilson High School Project Unify (Equity and Empowerment); Janet Runbeck (Community Health and Wellness); and Ron Rzewnicki (Youth Mentorship).

Since 1987, the City of Destiny Awards program, which is spearheaded by the City of Tacoma’s Events and Recognitions Committee, has honored over 200 local volunteers.

This year’s awards ceremony will be held on Weds., May 28, between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Cheney Stadium, located at 2502 S. Tyler St., in Tacoma. The event — which is a partnership between the City of Tacoma, United Way of Pierce County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and the Tacoma Rainiers — will include a  reception for award winners and their guests in Cheney Stadium’s Summit Club; an on-field, pre-game ceremony for award winners; an on-field, pre-game parade that award winners, nominees, United Way of Pierce County volunteers, and committee, board, and commission members can participate in; and recognition of each award winner in between inning breaks during the baseball game between the Tacoma Rainiers and Salt Lake Bees.
