Tacoma named 'Diversity Champion'

The Association of Washington Cities (AWC) has named Tacoma a “Diversity Champion.” The city, along with 15 other cities, received the award for meeting criteria in two categories, including:

– publicly recognizing the community’s diversity by issuing multiple ordinances related to anti-discrimination and pro-diversity issues; and

– taking steps to learn about, honor and support history, needs and contributions of diverse communities by maintaining a Human Rights Commission and an impressive Human Rights and Human Services Program, which is responsible for various services and projects including this year’s outstanding Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

Tacoma will be honored with a special Diversity Champion ribbon and recognized at the Association of Washington Cities annual conference, June 18 to June 20, in Spokane.

Mayor Bill Baarsma and City Councilman Doug Miller will attend the conference.
