Tacoma gang assessment report now available

A comprehensive gang assessment for the City of Tacoma was recently completed. The purpose of the assessment is to raise awareness and to create a better understanding of how gang crime is impacting the local community, and the factors related to Tacoma’s gang problems.

“Taking a comprehensive look at our community’s gang problem and determining the most effective path forward to reduce and prevent gang violence will help us focus on prevention and intervention,” said Council Member Victoria Woodards. “The Tacoma Gang Project Assessment is a starting point for turning the tide against Tacoma’s gang problems — it’s an investment in our community’s future.”

This assessment, that closely follows the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention comprehensive gang model, was designed to provide the most accurate, up to date snapshot of the demographic, economic, legal and education environments to enable the communities to better understand why gang activity exists, where it exists, who participates in this activity, where, and when these crimes occur. It is also designed to express the community’s impressions and thoughts on gang activity. The U.S. Department of Justice has grant funding available for gang-prevention and intervention efforts. Without a community gang assessment, Tacoma is not eligible for this funding. The assessment will serve as a tool for establishing a means of communications among community, social and public leaders to work collaboratively to reduce gang activity.
