Tacoma Avenue South Bridge will close Feb. 23 for 15-month, $12M rehab project

City of Tacoma officials announced Monday the Tacoma Avenue South Bridge will close this month as part of a major rehabilitation project.

The bridge is a key transportation corridor between downtown Tacoma and the Lincoln International Business District. It spans South Tacoma Way between South Delin Street and the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Center Street. The closure is necessary to reconstruct the bridge deck and guardrails, replace the girders, and paint the steel members of the bridge, which was built in the early 1930s.

Design work related to the project was completed last spring. The City put the project out for bid last summer. Tacoma City Council awarded a contract to complete the project to Quigg Bros., Inc. in September. The project is estimated to cost approximately $12 million and is funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Program, Transportation Improvement Board, and the City of Tacoma.

The bridge will be closed to all vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic beginning on Mon., Feb. 23, and remain closed for approximately 15 months.
