“The Sound Transit Board recently approved a motion setting September 2000 for introducing Sounder commuter rail service with three roundtrips daily on the Tacoma-Seattle route. The schedule is contingent upon inclusion of the commitment in a capital and operating agreement between the agency and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.Until a few months ago, Sounder commuter rail service had been anticipated to be in service before the end of this year. Reaching an agreement with the railroad has taken much longer than expected, according to Sound Transit.Track and signal improvements made to the route will increase the capacity of the railroad to handle more Sounder trains than originally planned, allowing their addition as demand grows. Improvements also should increase safety and reliability for Sounder trains as well as freight, Amtrak and commuter trains through the corridor, the agency said.”
