Public invited to help name South Hill athletic complex

The Puyallup School District and Pierce County are asking the public to help name an athletic complex to be developed on district property off 128th Street East between Rogers High School and Zeiger Elementary School. Residents are asked to bring their ideas to a community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 6 in the Rogers High School library.

“This recreational jewel will be enjoyed by our young people for years into the future,” said County Councilmember Calvin Goings. “We thought it would be great to have some of the creative people in South Hill and the surrounding area come up with possible names.”

Flyers are being distributed through the schools inviting students and others to submit possible names. People also can bring their suggestions to the public meeting.

Councilmember Kevin Wimsett said construction is scheduled to begin this summer with completion projected for the fall of 2005.

The complex will include four soccer fields, three combination softball and slowpitch fields, a fastpitch field and a baseball field. Five of the fields will be lighted. A restroom facility will be included, and pathways will be constructed throughout the 26-acre site.

The $8 million construction cost will be paid largely from the tenth of a cent sales tax measure approved by voters in 2000.
