Point Defiance celebrates Shark Week

If you suddenly hear the theme from “Jaws,” that can mean only two things: You should get out of the water and Shark Week is almost here. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium celebrates the awe-inspiring and misunderstood shark with a full week of activities, from Aug. 10 to Aug. 16.

Shark Week is designed to teach zoo visitors that sharks are not the blood-thirsty monsters of popular lore. In fact, most sharks go out of their way to avoid human contact unless provoked.

The zoo’s Shark Week coincides with Shark Week programming on The Discovery Channel.

Activities planned for Shark Week at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium include: aquarium dives: 11 a.m. Aug. 11, 13, 14, 15 (check for North Pacific Aquarium or South Pacific Aquarium location); Shark feeds: 11 a.m. Aug. 12, and 11 a.m. Aug. 16; Marine Lab: Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; special activities and crafts for children: noon to 2 p.m. daily outside the Marine Discovery Lab.
