Pierce County crews activate Canyon Road East traffic signals, open new lanes

Pierce County will activate new traffic signals at two intersections of Canyon Road East in Frederickson today and Thursday, resulting in lane restrictions over a two-hour period each day.

Lane restrictions at the intersection of Canyon Road East and Military Road East will occur between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday. Lane restrictions at the intersection of Canyon Road East and Brookdale Road East/160th St. East will occur between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Thursday. Crews will close lanes as needed during the work. Minimal traffic delays are expected.

The stretch of Canyon Road East from 160th Street East to 172nd East has been expanded to three lanes in each direction. Currently, there are two lanes in each direction. The two new lanes will open to traffic once both intersections reopen. The existing traffic signal systems at both intersections had to be rebuilt in order to accommodate the expanded roadway.

Pierce County is making a variety of improvements to this nearly-one-mile section of Canyon Road East to improve safety and relieve traffic congestion. In addition to modifying the traffic signals and expanding the roadway, the county is also adding paved shoulders; adding raised medians with designated left turn lanes and u-turn lanes at select locations; adding concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks; adding an enclosed storm drain system as well as stormwater treatment and storage facilities; and adding street lighting. Construction is expected to be completed next month. Northwest Construction, Inc. is the contractor for this project. The estimated final contract amount is approximately $5.6 million.
