Six Saanich Peninsula volunteers will receive special recognition from their community on February 13, when the annual Hearts of the Community Volunteer Awards ceremony is held at the Charlie White Theatre in Sidney.
Co-sponsors Beacon Community Services and the Peninsula News Review established the awards nine years ago to celebrate and honour volunteers, the hearts of our community.
Volunteers give generously of their time, energy and skills to improve the lives of others, and their impact is felt in every aspect of the community. They come from all age groups, as organizers, workers, canvassers, leaders, coaches, phoners, vistors, drivers and more. Together, they devote thousands of volunteer hours in our Peninsula community.
Everyone knows these special volunteers. Reflect on the past year and youre sure to think of one or more people that you can nominate to help acknowledge their efforts. Categories include outstanding youth volunteer (age 14 to 19, also receives of a $1,000 education scholarship), service to seniors, service to children and families, community service/project by a group, overall service to the community, and lifetime service award.
Eligible people are local residents, as well as those residing outside the area, who do/have done beneficial volunteer work on the Saanich Peninsula.
Nomination forms are available online at www.beaconcs.ca and for pick-up at the Peninsula News Review office, Beacon Community Services Third Street office, Beacon Plaza Volunteer Centre and area Thrift Stores.
Deadline for nomination submissions is February 2.
A special panel will then select the category winners to be honoured, along with all nominees, at the awards ceremony.
Also part of this special event are musical performances and an inspirational address (generously sponsored by Thrifty Foods) from Dr. Martin Collis, North Americas foremost speaker on personal and professional wellness.
