New faces at Tacoma Rail

Daniel Burns has joined Tacoma Rail as manager of network operations and Catherine Mitchell has joined the railroad as manager of finance and support services. They join Tacoma’s freight-switching railroad at a time of unprecedented growth and expansion in the Port of Tacoma and other parts of the Tacoma Rail service area.

“Both Dan and Catherine bring management expertise and skills that will help Tacoma Rail enhance the services we bring to our customers,” said Superintendent Paula Henry, who made the appointments. “Both are committed to Tacoma Rail and to the economic development opportunities that we bring to Tacoma and Pierce County.”

Burns came to Tacoma Rail from the BNSF Railway, where he was manager of the Tacoma terminal. He started with the BNSF in 1980 as an operator and held positions of increasing responsibility during his career with the transcontinental carrier. Prior to joining the BNSF, he worked for the former Milwaukee Railroad.

Mitchell previously held a variety of management positions with various City of Tacoma departments, most recently assistant director of the General Services Department, with responsibility for fleet services, the public safety radio system, records management, the City Clerk’s Office and the Tacoma Narrows Airport. She is treasurer of the national Association of Fleet Administrators, treasurer of the Municipal League of Tacoma and serves on the Salvation Army advisory board.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in management and a master of business administration degree in finance from New York University.
