Museums open doors for area educators

Area educators are invited to attend Back-to-School Night in downtown Tacoma’s Museum District Oct. 11, 2005 from 5 to 8 pm. This free event provides area educators with an opportunity to learn more about the educational programs and resources offered by many prominent arts, literacy, health, and environmental organizations in Pierce County.

Teachers will spend the evening discussing educational opportunities with representatives from nearly forty organizations including the three downtown museums: Tacoma Art Museum, Washington State History Museum, and Museum of Glass, as well as Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Pierce County Library System, Tacoma Pierce County Health Department, EnviroChallenger, and Broadway Center for the Performing Arts.

“Back-to-School Night is a way for us to introduce teachers to the educational resources that exist in the community,” said Carri Campbell, Associate Curator of Education at Tacoma Art Museum. “We know that teachers are always looking for opportunities to enhance their curricula and to allow their students to have educational experiences outside the classroom. This evening has been very successful in the past and teachers tell us it’s a valuable event for them.”

The event begins at Tacoma Art Museum, where teachers can explore the museum’s galleries and educational facilities, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and learn what the participating organizations offer for their students in the new school year. Workshops, performances, and hands-on activities will also be presented at Washington State History Museum and Museum of Glass. Finally, teachers also have the opportunity to win FREE prizes, including class trips and classroom educational resources.
