Murray Morgan Bridge Update: Public meeting, bridge opening planned

The next public meeting to discuss the Murray Morgan Bridge rehabilitation will be held today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Foss Harbor Marina offices located at 821 Dock St. Topics for discussion will be status of work, upcoming activities, process for filing claims, and any community concerns or questions.

Beginning Mon., Dec. 12 and continuing through Fri., Dec. 23, Cliff Street will be closed at the bridge to allow the painting contractor to erect containment to remove existing paint on the bridge over Cliff Street and to paint this area. Due to the low clearance at Cliff Street, the containment will require closure of Cliff Street. During the closure, Cliff Street from the bridge to 12th Street will be a two-way street.

The next scheduled Bridge opening will be from Sat., Dec. 24, 2011 through Sun., Jan. 1, 2012. Until that time, the bridge will be closed except for emergency openings, and in those cases, 12 hour advance notice will be required. Similarly, there has been a request to have the January bridge opening the weekend of January 13 through 15 to accommodate tall ships coming in that weekend. The contractor is able to accommodate this request with the bridge being open Friday afternoon, but is allowing one week for any further comments or suggestions regarding this date.

The painting contractor continues paint removal and priming the steel immediately below the city approach deck, which is expected to last through December. Paint removal and priming on the city approach columns and support steel will occur into February. On the trusses, gusset plates are being installed and strengthening of the bottom chord is underway. Demolition of the south half of the deck will progress from the lift span to the east truss. The Port approach column jackets will be grouted to the columns once warmer weather occurs. Core drilling for seismic restrainers on the Port approach is scheduled to begin next week. Pier 3 retrofit activities will continue through next week.
