Murray Morgan Bridge closure begins today

The “Murray Morgan” Bridge, which carries 11th Street between the Port of Tacoma and the city’s downtown, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, April 3-6, for Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) maintenance inspections.

For safety reasons involving load limits, the bridge will be closed at each end during the inspections. Emergency vehicles only will be allowed to cross the bridge during the closures.
Signs posted near each end of the bridge will direct motorists to a detour via St. Paul Avenue, 15th Street, ‘D’ Street, Puyallup Avenue and Pacific Avenue.

The Murray Morgan Bridge, 1,748 feet long, was built in 1911 and was rebuilt in 1957. In 1997, the lift-span bridge was named for Tacoma native and historian Murray Morgan, who reportedly worked as a Tacoma-area bridge tender in the 1950s.
