Ground broken on Tacoma Dome Sounder Station

A little precipitation couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those who showed up for Wednesday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony of Sound Transit’s Tacoma Dome Sounder Station at Freighthouse Square.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray was on hand, as were Tacoma City Councilman Kevin Phelps – a member of the Sound Transit Board – and Julie Anderson, manager of the Tacoma Dome Business District Office. Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg was master of ceremonies.

It will be the first location to offer all three of Sound Transit’s services – rail, light rail (September 2003) and ST Express. Local Pierce Transit bus service, Greyhound and Amtrak are also accessible, making it a true multi-modal facility.

In 1996 voters approved funding for Sound Transit to provide a regional system of transit improvements.
