Free day at Point Defiance for Tacoma residents

Sept. 19: The zoo says thanks to 1999 voters.

acoma residents can enjoy free admission to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium on Sunday, Sept. 19.

The free day is offered as a thank-you to Tacoma voters, who in 1999 approved a $35 million bond issue to pay for Zoo improvements. The money is being used for exciting additions to the Zoo, including Asian Forest Sanctuary, the new Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater, and the new children’s zoo opening next year.

To qualify for free admission on Sept. 19, visitors must reside within Tacoma city limits and bring proof of residency, such as a photo ID with current address or a utility bill. The zoo also rewards Pierce County residents with discounted admission prices every day. That discount recognizes the support of Pierce County voters, who approved a sales tax in 2000 that contributes to zoo operations.
