Former Borders location near Tacoma Mall will re-open as furniture store

A former Borders book store location, located at 2508 South 38th Street near the Tacoma Mall and shuttered since May 2011, will re-open in July as Ashley Furniture HomeStore, according to the City of Tacoma’s community and economic development department.

The furniture store is expected to employ approximately 50 to 75 employees, according to department director Ryan Petty. The information was included in Tacoma City Manager T. C. Broadnax’s May 3 weekly report to Tacoma City Council.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore has locations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and Japan. In Washington State, the company has stores in Burlington, Richland, Silverdale, and Tukwila.

“Activating this idle asset is another important indicator that the Tacoma investment climate is improving,” wrote Broadnax in his report.

“Coming Soon” and “Now Hiring” signs have been posted outside the building. For more information, contact recruiting@ashleyhc.com or (877) 314-8457.

Borders filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2011.
