Five Mile Drive closed Aug. 30 for upgrades

Five Mile Drive in Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, August 30 for installation of three speed humps. The 16-foot wide speed humps will be gently sloped, allowing cyclists to cross at full speed while cars need to slow down to safely cross over them.

“We’ve chosen locations where there is heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic and the speed humps will increase safety for everyone,” Doug Fraser, design and construction manager for Metro Parks Tacoma, said. The locations are:

— just beyond the Owen Beach exit before the Spine Trail pedestrian crossing

— Gig Harbor viewpoint

— Fort Nisqually between the picnic area and the Fort Access to Fort Nisqually may be disrupted during the installation. Call Doug Fraser at (253) 305-1019 for up-to-date information.

Asphalt Patch Systems Inc. is doing the work, which is expected to cost $6,000.
