Fatal accident closes Port of Tacoma terminals

Officials closed all Port of Tacoma terminals Tuesday following a fatal accident at the Pierce County Terminal, located at 4015 State Route 509 and North Frontage Road, in Tacoma.

According to Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Joe Meineke, at approximately 12:08 p.m. fire fighters from stations 2, 8, 9, and 12 responded to a report of a person injured atop a container crane. Upon arrival, firefighters ascended the large container crane, located the person, and confirmed he had died in an apparent industrial accident.

The identity of the deceased person, as well as the precise cause, time, and manner of death will be determined by the Pierce County Medical Examiners Office.

All Port of Tacoma terminals are expected to be closed until 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. “Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends,” Port of Tacoma officials announced on the agency’s Web site.

UPDATE Weds., March 13 @ 11:27 a.m. — Port of Tacoma officials provide the following information:

All Port of Tacoma terminals are back in operation today following a fatal accident at Pierce County Terminal Tuesday. A member of ILWU Local 23 employed with Pacific Crane Maintenance Co. was injured and died during routine maintenance on a crane at the terminal. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends. The state Department of Labor & Industries is investigating the cause of the accident.
